Single-phase cubic scandia-stabilized zirconia (9 mol % Sc_2O_3, 9 ScSZ) powder was synthesized using a co-precipitation technique. The sintering characteristics of the powder and the microstructures of sintered samples were examined with dilatometry and SEM. The electrical conductivity of 9ScSZ was measured using the AC impedance method in the temperature range from 500°C to 900°C. The 9ScSZ powder was used to prepare anode-supported fuel cells with a ~ 60 micron thick electrolyte using a tape casting method. The cells with a Cu-CeO_2-9ScSZ anode and a YSZ-LSM cathode demonstrated the ability to directly operate with dry hydrogen, butane and methane fuels in the 650°C to 750°C temperature range. At 700°C, the cell maximum power densities were 0.29 W/cm~2, 0.15 W/cm~2 and 0.115 W/cm~2 at 700v for H_2, C_4H_(10) and CH_4 fuel, respectively.
