摘要

The shrimp fishery is the most important of all the Mexican fisheries in economic terms. Although it comprises only 2.66% of the total national catches, income derived from it leaches 21.22% of the 1.1 billion USD gross value of Mexican fishing production. The shrimp fleet comprises 67% of the industrial fishing fleet in Mexico (CONAPESCA 2001). The Gulf of Mexico fishery catches 22% of the shrimp caught in the country, and nearly 70% of this comes from the brown shrimp Farfantepenaeus aztecus fishery off Tamaulipas, just south of the U.S. border, and northern Veracruz (farther south) (Figure 1). Artisanal shrimp fisheries are very important for local economies in many Mexican coastal states.
