Biomass gasification offers the potential for producing a fuel gas that can be used for power generation system or synthesis gas applications. Gasification involves partial oxidation of taw material to obtain the mixture of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, water, and small amount of methane and higher hydrocarbons. The product gas also contains variable amounts of ash particles, volatile alkali metals and tar, which is a complex mixture of aromatics. Despite extensive research efforts tar formation is still a major problem in biomass gasification system. The condensable compounds present in tar may cause problems in downstream equipment making catalytic hot gas cleaning a necessary step in most gasification applications.
