SPECIAL DEDICATION/BYRON BRITT CLOW 1922-2002

Byron Clow was born January 2, 1922 in Lewistown, Montana and grew up and attended schools in the local area. His father had homesteaded in Montana and was an accountant and also was elected sheriff. Byron liked chemistry, but was also influenced by the large amount of mining and metallurgy that was apparent in the state. He entered Montana School of Mines in Butte in the fall of 1940. In the summer of 1941, Byron went to Vancouver, BC to enlist in pilot training for the Royal Canadian Air Force. He failed the eyesight tests for pilot training. Byron then went to Seattle and got a job to help in the war effort working as an estimator in a manufacturing company. It was in Seattle that he met Jean Williamson who was originally from Butte, Montana and had moved to Seattle with her parents. They met through mutual friends and dated briefly. Byron returned to college in the fall, but was drafted in 1942. He attended basic training and because of his college background and high-level test scores, Byron was chosen for Officer Training and sent to Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Commissioned as a 2~(nd) Lt.in the Army Corps of Engineers, he ultimately ended up in the Philippines where he spent the remainder of his required service. He kept constantly in touch with Jean during this period in his life, not wanting her to be getting interested in anyone else.. He was discharged in 1946 as a 1~(st) Lt. and returned to Seattle to marry Jean and then they both went back to Butte so By could complete his education. He graduated with a BS in Metallurgical Engineering in 1947.
