The Byron Johnson Salvage Yard and the former Dirk's Farm property are in Ogle211u001eCounty about half way between the cities of Byron and Oregon in the northern part 211u001eof Illinois. Waste materials containing volatile organic compounds, cyanide, and 211u001eheavy metals were disposed improperly at both properties and resulted in 211u001eextensive soil, sediment, and groundwater contamination. Because of the 211u001egroundwater contamination, most residences that used private wells have been 211u001econnected to public water from the city of Byron. Nevertheless, the site poses a 211u001epublic health hazard for individuals who continue to use contaminated well water 211u001eand for people living outside the public water supply service area who use 211u001eprivate well water that may be contaminated and are downgradient from the site. 211u001eSoil and waste removal, fencing, and establishment of vegetation at the Salvage 211u001eYard have reduced the likelihood of direct soil contact and dust emissions. 211u001eShould the fence around the site be removed, any future development of the 211u001eSalvage Yard may increase the potential for human exposure to contaminated soil. 211u001eThe main health effect that could result from such exposure is contact dermatitis 211u001ein sensitive individuals.
