Photopromoted Carbonylation of Olefins with Carbon Dioxide under Ambient Conditions

Carbon dioxide is known to cause harmful greenhouse effect, and what is worse is that it is fairly inert to chemical reactions. Yet a lot of progresses have been made with the process of research work. For instance, the tolemerization of butadiene with carbon dioxide yielding lactones, acids and esters has been the subjects of several investigations. In recent years, photocatalyzed carbonylations of CO_2 in place of CO have made advance, for instance, the carbonylation of CO_2 with α, β -unsaturated esters and ketones. The reactions of CO_2 with olefins, however, are now mainly limited to those reactions in which expensive metal catalysts(Ru, Pd) and higher temperatures (90 ~ 165°C) are necessary. From this point of view, it is of great importance to incorporate CO_2 into olefins at ambient conditions.
