By using supercritical fluid, it is possible to improve the β-MN conversion and catalyst life in HZSM-5 catalytic alkylation of β-MN with methanol, while keep high selectivity of DMN. At 460°C and 7.2Mpa, the β-MN conversion in HZSM-5 catalytic alkylation of β-MN with methanol in 1,3,5-TMB keeps at about 7.0% for about 100 hours with about 90% β, β-DMN selectivity. While at ambient pressure, the β-MN conversion decreases from 3.2% to below 1% in 24 hours. The amount and type of coke deposited on the catalyst surface are not decisive factor that results in the decrease of catalyst activity.
