In the discussion about future vehicle lighting systems it becomes clear that the major requirements in this area are not only to be regarded as reliability, economic efficiency and technical lighting performance, but that rather the adaptation of the lighting to match a given situation is also a deciding criterion. The area of the vehicle where the most progress has been made in this sense is certainly the dashboard. In modern vehicles systems have already been realised where not only the brightness of the instrument panel can be set by the driver, but where information can be faded in depending on priorities and a wide range of forms of representation can be realised. The technological improvements over the past few years make it possible today to implement adaptive concepts with an intelligent vehicle wiring system for general vehicle lighting by using new powerful light sources combined with information gained by sensors. In the following, the tasks, possibilities, different solutions and perspectives for front-lighting, signal systems and interior lighting will be investigated in more detail.
