Synthesis of Ceramic Compounds Utilizing Woody Waste Materials and Rice Husk

Woody waste materials and rice husk were utilized for the combustion synthesis or self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) of ceramic composites. They were mixed with titanium powder. Consequently, titanium carbide (TiC) phase was detected by X-ray diffraction experiments, while any oxide phase was not observed in a system of the woody waste material and titanium. It was found that combustion velocity of the mixture tended to increase with relative carbon contents in the wastes. According to XRD experiments, it was also expected that carbon might be released or decarbonized partially as carbon oxide from the wastes during SHS. On the other hand, a composite consisting of Al_2O_3 and SiC ceramics could be obtained from mixture of rice husk and aluminum powder by SHS, but included impurity phases.
