In each metal cutting process, self excited vibrations may occur. These chatter vibrations reduce surface finish of the workpiece, accelerate tool wear and may damage the spindle bearings. The experimental study of orthogonal cutting allows to define the conditions to avoid and the stability modes of the process. Here is presented a specific instrumentation permitting the measurement of the cutting tool micro-displacements during the turning process. The signals obtained are correlated with the cutting force values measured by a dynamometer, with the tool wear measured by white light interferometry and with the mean friction coefficient calculated from cutting forces.
