The invention relates to the machining of metals. The cutting tool forming the subject of the invention, equipped with a wear-resistant coating, consisting of refractory compounds of metals which are difficult to melt, is of the type including, between the substrate and the coating, an intermediate layer of pure metal and is characterised in that the substrate is manufactured from a ceramic or metalloceramic material based on aluminium oxide and in that said intermediate layer is discontinuous. The invention enables the manufacturing cost of the tool to be reduced and its strength to be improved.
