There are numerous causes of unsuccessful ERP implementations worldwide and across industry. This paper explores challenges involved in implementing an ERP system in a phased manner as the main approach to enterprise integration within a large transport organisation as a case study. A semi-structured questionnaire was developed to interview the top and middle management personnel and power users of the system who were involved in the initial implementation. The results of the case study highlight the misalignment of the organisational structure as one of the challenges caused by the implementation sequence adopted. This challenge is reported by 27.3% of the case study participants. Implementation sequence challenges are specific to phased implementations and are rarely discussed in previous research projects. Other key challenges encountered are inadequate training and excessive customisation of the system. An improvement programme was launched in order to address and correct all issues encountered during and after implementation. Areas for future research are also identified from the findings of the case study.
