This paper exploits the interactions between the machine scheduling and the scheduling of the material handling system in an FMS by addressing them simultaneously. This problem is composed of two interrelated decision problems (ie) the scheduling of machines and the scheduling of Automated Guided Vehicle (AGVs). Both problems are known to be Non Polynomial hard problems, resulting in a more complicated NP-hard problem when they are considered simultaneously. In this work, an Artificial Immune System algorithm (AIS) is introduced. This algorithm is applied to a set of 82 test problems which were constructed by other researchers and the results are compared. The results indicate the good performance of AIS when compared to other algorithms developed by other researchers.
