The MILLENNIUM project is a recently completed EU-funded exercise, a major part of which was to instrument a Norwegian bridge to achieve better monitoring of the structure in use. To do so an effective, thermally-compensated strain measurement technique using a series of strain-isolated fibre Bragg gratings has been demonstrated. An important aspect of the project was the field testing of the multi-channel fibre Bragg grating sensor system, developed as part of a new condition maintenance programme. This enables real time online integrity monitoring for not only the new Norwegian steel road bridge but potentially for other civil engineering structures. The results of laboratory and field trials are presented as are further applications of the technology in the civil engineering sector.
