The Business Case for Greenhouse Gas Management

The current policy environment in the United States (U.S.) is not a particularly compelling driver for companies to direct resources toward the measurement of greenhouse gases and the development of management programs. But despite the lack of domestic regulatory pressure, many companies are moving ahead with such investments. For some organizations, a greenhouse gas management program is related to its energy management program, and represents a traditional business goal of increasing efficiency and reducing costs. Other firms, having experienced negative effects of unpreparedness for emerging regulations, are using this opportunity to position themselves for future regulatory compliance. Companies view greenhouse gas management as a necessary part of their participation in the global marketplace and realize that international and foreign regulations are likely to precede U.S. policy development. Finally, some companies see greenhouse gas management as a strategic issue that, through early understanding and skill development, can be used as a competitive advantage in the marketplace. The paper examines the motives associated with these actions and reviews the emerging business case in favor of proactive steps toward greenhouse gas management. In addition, the path from greenhouse gas management to the issues of sustainability is explored.
