Integrating Pollution Prevention, Inherent Process Safety and Green Chemistry Concepts in Process Design

Inherently Safer Chemical Processes (IS), Pollution Prevention (P2), and Green Chemistry (GC) have as their goals to develop non-hazardous processes that produce no waste, use only renewable feed materials and manufacture products that are not toxic, bio-accumulative and persistent. However, each discipline is practiced separately, and only recently businesses have recognized how these technologies can enhance their business earnings. AIChE's Center for Waste Reduction Technology (CWRT) and Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS) project has developed an overall P2/IS/GC framework that guides manufacturing process development. The focus of the project is to combine the strengths of each discipline to insure that P2, IS and GC issues are addressed at all stages of process development, especially at the early stage of conceptual chemistry development. This paper presents a worked example, based on an actual study, to illustrate the application of integrating P2, IS and GC and to demonstrate the business advantage of the integration of EHS perspectives.
