Removal of CO2 from flue gas of municipal solid waste incinerators

In recent years, global warming has become a very important issue. About 223 million tons greenhouse gas CO2 were emitted in Taiwan in 2000. There are 36 large-scale municipal incinerators in Taiwan, and a total of 8.5 million tons of greenhouse gas CO2 are emitted. In other words, they account for about 5% of the total CO2 emission in Taiwan. In order to reduce CO2 greenhouse gas emission from municipal solid waste incinerators, we investigated the chemical absorption method for removing CO2 from flue gas of a municipal solid waste incinerator in Taiwan. In this study, we used three absorption solvents, NaOH, monoethanolamine (MEA) and ammonia (NH3) solvents, to absorb CO2 in flue gas. Our results show that the removal efficiency of CO2 increases with the solvent concentration and L/G ratio for three solvents. The highest CO2 removal efficiency was 76% at NaOH solvent concentration of 3N, L/G ratio of 4.5 L/m~3, CO2 inlet concentration of 10%(v/v) and gas inlet temperature of 50°C. The highest CO2 removal efficiency was 97% at MEA solvent concentration of 30%(w/w), L/G ratio of 4.5 L/m~3, CO2 inlet concentration of 10%(v/v) and gas inlet temperature of 50°C. The highest CO2 removal efficiency was 89% at NH3 solvent concentration of 30%(w/w), L/G ratio of 4.5 L/m~3, CO2 inlet concentration of 10%(v/v) and gas inlet temperature of 50°C. The implications of the data are discussed in detail.
