Optimizing Environmental Management Systems in the Power Industry

Many organizations in the power industry have recognized the need to improve environmental and health and safety (EH&S) performance. One methodology to achieve this is to implement systems management approaches similar to those used in the business operations. Properly designed EH&S management systems (MS) can provide both structure and process to identify and address environmental impacts and ensure regulatory compliance. After several years of operating under these systems, companies are now entering a new stage with management systems by engaging in critical evaluations of system performance and underlying structures. Many companies are using the experience gained to restructure and optimize their systems to meet new needs and challenges. A common improvement involves the expansion and transfer of environmental roles and responsibilities from "environmental staff to operations personnel, who because of their involvement in many activities are positioned to directly drive improvements in environmental performance. To demonstrate this re-evaluation and optimization process, this presentation will present a case study in which a utility service group re-designed its existing EMS and refocused and optimized its design to move its EMS to this second stage.
