Total hip prostheses are broadly classified as either cemented or cementless. Total hip replacement is indicated for the treatment of end stage osteoarthritis in dogs. Osteoarthritis may be the result of hip dysplasia, trauma or sepsis. Total hip replacement is generally contraindicated in the presence of infection or concomitant neurologic defecits. The Zurich Cementless Total Hip Replacement (ZCTHR) is a novel, modular, cementless system. It is currently, the only commercially available cementlesstotal hip available in the United States. While there is certainly controversy over the superiority of cementless versus cemented systems, each possesses advantages and disadvantages and the universal acceptance of a single system is not necessary.
