Surgery of the salivary glands

Disorders of the salivary glands in small animals is rather common in dogs and rare in cats. Salivary mucoceles, fistulae, neoplasia and sialadenitis are the diseases diagnosed most frequently. Traumatic injury to salivary glands or ducts may occur.It is rare, but sialoliths have been found in the parotid ducts of dogs. The dog has four pair of salivary glands and the cat has an additional pair of buccal salivary glands located at the commisure of the cat's mouth. Mandibular and sublingual salivary glands -This gland is located near the junction of the maxillary and linguofacial veins and shares a common dense capsule with the monostomatic portion of the sublingual salivary gland. The ducts from both glands course together between the masseter muscle and the mandible laterally, and the digastricus muscle medially. The mandibular and sublingual ducts open in to the mouth at the sublingual papilla at the rostral end of the frenulum. The openings of these ducts may be common or separate at the papilla. The polystomatic portion of the sublingual salivary gland is located just under the oral mucosa lateral to the tongue.
