Control plans- ensuring the economic return of the application of statistical thinking

Despite what Deming preached, the vast majority of business leaders believe that they are in business to make money. Many improvement initiatives of the past have been viewed as improving quality for the sake of improving quality and failed to deliver any significant results to the bottom line. The effective application of statistical thinking in any improvement effort requires that the project be tied to strategic quality plans (top-down approach), or address what is causing pain to the organization (bottom-up approach), and a system of control- accountability, responsibility, audits, and management reviews - be institutionalized to sustain the gains.
