Hydraulic fluids currently used in mining, construction and other off-highway applications include a wide variety of commercial multi-viscosity engine oils (15W40, 10W30) as well as single-grade (10W and 30W) fluids. The trend towards longer drain intervals as well as increasingly severe operating conditions of off-highway hydraulic systems is placing more stress on fluids not primarily designed for hydraulic applications In addition, changes in engine oils required to meet performance, efficiency, and emission regulations may make them much less suitable for hydraulic applications. This paper describes the development, testing, and field evaluations of a new generation of shear stable, multi-viscosity, long life hydraulic fluids that will stand up to the severe shearing, oxidation, and thermal stresses experienced in large off-highway applications.
