Proportional direction control valves are usually used in open loop applications, especially in mobile machine applications. Closed loop systems are coming more popular also in this application field. Proportional direction control valves can be used also as a part of velocity sensor. This kind of use requires rather high quality valves with small dead band and hysteresis. Possibilities to compensate quite large dead band and hysteresis, typical to cost-effective proportional valves, are studied with simulations and experimental tests. Experimental test results are shown and discussed.
