A high-speed, high-flow, two-stage, three-way poppet valve has been designed, built, and tested at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Fluid Power Research Laboratory (UW-FPRL). The valve uses a commercial diesel fuel injection system's hydraulic electronic unit injector (HEUI) valve to pilot a second high-flow stage. The second stage utilizes a pressure-balanced, three-poppet assembly with a total flow area of 322.6 mm{sup}2 (0.5 in{sup}2) and a working pressure of up to 20.7 MPa (3000 psi). A simulation was developed, prior to construction of the valve, which estimated a valve opening time of 3 ms. The prototype valve was capable of opening times of less than 4 ms.
