It has been possible to reduce the energy losses in a hydrostatic pump/motor unit by more than half with the use of a different design principle denominated Poweroll. It is a rotary, radial piston design entirely supported on roller bearings, with very high flow capacity which results in a unit having an extremely high mechanical and volumetric efficiency throughout its operating range and whose speed range is extended 2-3 times beyond the possibilities of current designs. The design overcomes the typical drawbacks of known hydrostatic designs whose effective operating range is limited by high energy losses caused mostly by friction between moving parts, the effects of centrifugal forces and alternating masses, as well as by fluid friction caused by restricted flow capacity. The absence of significant sources of friction and vibration favors reliability, smoothness of operation and performance characteristics that do not deteriorate with use and time. This also means the design is suitable for use with fire resistant or other low viscosity or ecological hydraulic fluids. This system can be employed in applications such as automotive variators, with higher overall efficiency and with effective speed range more than double that of other types of variators on the market. and which promotes the use of the hydrostatic transmission in 'fast' infinitely variable transmissions.
