Recent developments in hydraulic pump technology have created a quasi-variable, discrete flow pump. This technology offers numerous benefits to machine efficiency and to the overall installed cost of the system. A pump with discrete flow output offers an option to system designers that will fill the gap between fixed displacement pumps and variable displacement pumps. This technology can be especially useful in hydraulic fan drive systems, open circuit motor drives, and multiple section valve controlled systems where fixed displacement systems may be too inefficient and fully variable displacement systems too costly. By careful selection of the discrete steps, flow can be modulated to fulfill the needs of the system in an efficient manner.
