When seeking a pump for a low-flow, high-head application, there is a temptation to choose a high-speed (HS) integral gear-driven centrifugal pump because of its advantages over multistage centrifugal and other types of pumps. However, depending upon operating conditions and requirements, a pitot tube pump maybe preferable due to its unique features. In this article, the key features of pitot tube pumps are identified and compared to the features of HS integral gear-driven pumps (here referred to as HS pumps), which have been widely used in a range of industries in low-flow, high-head applications.
