An optical strain measurement system was successfully developed to measure transient strains of a mercury target vessel in an intense radiation environment. In this measurement system, the fiber-optic Fabry-Perot sensors are used as strain gages. This strain measurement system works well to measure strains ranging from 1 to 1000 microstrains of a target vessel in intense electric fields and magnetic fields or X-ray and gamma-ray radiation. In addition, phosphor thermometry (PT) was developed for measuring surface temperatures of mercury and galvanneal steel. The PT technique is being chosen for measuring surface temperatures of liquid-metal jets or sheets for fusion devices. This paper describes such optical measurements and discusses potential applications.
