The third KRES~(TM) technology based ammonia plant has now been in successful operation since 2009. KRES is a viable revamp option to debottleneck the reforming section of an ammonia plant. However, it presents Other challenges such as reduced steam generation. KBR has recently patented a new synthesis loop revamp technology that generates additional high pressure steam from the ammonia converter effluent stream. This paper explores the unique combination of the new synthesis loop revamp technology in the back-end with KRES technology in the front-end of the ammonia plant The resulting combination is an attractive revamp scheme with significant capacity increase and energy savings benefits as is illustrated by the case studies in this paper.
