Stress Corrosion Cracking in an Atmospheric Ammonia Storage Tank

During an external ultrasonic inspection in 2008, crack-like indications were found on an ammonia storage tank that had been in operation since 1990. These indications have been monitored since. Based on these observations, the tank was opened in the fall of 2010. During the internal inspection, extensive cracking was observed on the cylindrical shell as well as on the tank bottom which has been attributed to Stress Corrosion Cracking.
