Potential use of outer membrane proteins as subunit vaccines against Streptococcus suis and Haemophilus parasuis

Both Streptococcus suis and Haemophilus parasuis are important invasive bacterial pathogens of swine, commonly causing meningitis, arthritis, polyserositis, and septicemia. Due to the presence of many serotypes and high genotypic variability, broadlyprotective efficacious vaccines are not readily available. We have used functional genomic and proteomic methods to select protein candidates for evaluation in vaccine trials testing both homologous and heterologous protection against these pathogens.
