Field evaluation of an avirulent live Haemophilus parasuis vaccine

Haemophilus parasuis (Hps) causes high morbidity and mortality in pigs due to pneumonia and polyserositis. Disease is typically stress-associated and exacerbated by viral infections (eg. PRRSv). The 2000-2006 NAHMS1 reported a 230% and 340% increase of Hps in nursery and grow-finish pigs, respectively. Control strategies using killed and autogenous vaccines show a lack of cross protection between Hps serovars, while exposure to live Hps or an avirulent live vaccine provides protection to heterologous strains.The goal of this study was to evaluate the use of a newly licensed avirulent live Haemophilus parasuis vaccine (ParaSail~R, Newport Laboratories, Worthington, Minnesota) as a method to control morbidity and mortality in commercial nurseries.
