I covered some of the interventions and the impact that are seen during post wean respiratory diseases. The following apply to all disease issues: Environment is important. Try to think like the pig but remember that they are not wearing clothes so make sure your bare skin feels comfortable and that humidity is controlled. Antibiotics are an effective control program especially when they can be timed properly or as individual treatment. We are then able to knock down the bug in the environment and gain control quickly. This applies especially to an acute case so we need to be aware of the antimicrobial susceptibilities as you would with feed and water administration. Remember that they are a population based treatment and may not work as quickly oras effectively as individually injecting pigs but needs to be part of a control program. Both commercial and autogenous vaccines can be effective against many of the respiratory and systemic diseases that were reviewed in this paper. Timing and administration are keys as well as herd specific needs. I have worked through many situations and found that you can have a positive impact on the health production and profitability of the pig.
