As veterinarians involved in the pork industry, we need to be leaders in the area of animal welfare. This is much more than just euthanasia, it is providing guidance and training concerning the level of care that is being given to all animals on the farm whether they are healthy or unhealthy. In the veterinary oath that we all took, as well as in the code of veterinary ethics, we as veterinarians have a commitment to protect animal health and relieve animal suffering. Veterinarians are regarded as experienced professionals in animal care, we need to uphold that status everyday in every farm, and promote and encourage diligence.
