Investigation of associations between risk factors, reported clinical PRRS breaks and reproductive performance in swine breeding herds

Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome virus (PRRSV) has troubled the swine industry for more than twenty years. During that time many resources have been directed at understanding the virus and its effects on the performance of swine breedingherds. Decreases in production performance in clinically active PRRS herds have been well defined. These herds commonly show an increase in abortions, early farrow-ings, stillbirths, and preweaning mortality. There have been and continue to be numerous advances in the understanding of PRRSV including the transmission and detection of PRRSV. However, the management practices and risk factors affecting the frequency and severity of PRRSV infections are not completely understood. Throughout the swine industry there continues to be significant variation of actions in the face of clinical PRRSV disease episodes. The objective of this cross-sectional study was to collect past performance data and compare that historical data to the herd's management practices and risk factors. Using this information, specific herd characteristics, management practices and risk factors were evaluated with the goal of identifying specific factors in reducing the reproductive and economic impact of PRRSV in breeding herds.
