Reproductive effects associated with PCV2 in naive sows artificially inseminated with spiked boar semen

Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) is a small, non-enveloped, single stranded, circular DNA virus of approximately 1.7kb that is known to be associated with reproductive failure in swine. PCV2-associated reproductive failure in pregnant sows can manifest as either irregular return to estrus, abortion, or increased numbers of non-viable pigs at birth. Once PCV2 crosses the placenta, the virus has a tropism for fetal myocardial tissues and generally results in myocardial necrosis, inflammation, and fibrosis.
