PCV2 vaccinology: development of an effective chimeric vaccine against PCV2 infection and its its associated diseases

First discovered as a non-cytopathic contaminant of the porcine kidney cell line PK-15, porcine circovirus (PCV) is a small, non-enveloped, icosahedral virus with a single-stranded circular DNA genome of approximately 1.76 kb.25-26 PCV is classified in the family of Circoviridae which includes psittacine beak and feather disease virus, chicken anemia virus, and several plant circoviruses.5'28 Little is known regarding the infection and pathogenesis of PCV in non-porcine species, even though antibodies to PCV have been reportedly detected in several non-porcine species. The PK-15 cell line-derived PCV, now designated PCV1, is non-pathogenic to pigs.
