The cosmological constant problem, the spontaneously broken symmetry, and the generalized rest energy

We study the consequences of spontaneously broken symmetry on the structure of space- time. In particular, we look for the modification of E = mc{sup}2 when Minkowski space is replaced by de Sitter or anti-de Sitter space as a result of a non-vanishing vacuum energy.
