Due to the special structural characteristics of wharves, there is no unified national code for seismic design of wharves in the United States. Generally, the AASHTO Bridge Design Specifications, Uniform Building Code, and Mil-Handbook of NAVFAC are used. This paper discusses the seismic design provisions that are applicable to wharves and describes the analysis theories of wharf to determine the structural seismic response. Various key features of the wharf were considered in the analysis. The computer software GJ-STRUC with graphical interface was developed by authors to analyze the seismic performance of wharves. Guidelines of structural design and construction of wharves in seismic zones are summarized based upon the finished projects in Central America and the Caribbean.
