The Importance of Environmental Issues to Australian Ports

Many Australian ports are located near areas of high conservation value. The importance of environmental issues in port operation and development has increased markedly over the past few decades. Port operations are now subject to considerable overview in terms of environmental issues both from a legislative and community perspective. In order for the ports to continue to operate and expand, they must ensure all port activities are effectively managed from an environmental perspective. This paper provides an overview of the key elements (Environmental Policy, Environmental Management Systems, Community Consultation, Strategic Planning, Monitoring and Reporting) of effective environmental management for a port in an area of high conservation value. Examples are provided of how the Port of Brisbane Corporation operates within Moreton Bay, Queensland and how the Corporation is achieving its aim of working towards world's best environmental practice. Moreton Bay is a Marine Park and has many rare or endangered species, including some listed in international agreements. Much of the experience gained at the Port of Brisbane is directly applicable to other ports. The Port of Brisbane Corporation has recognised that effective environmental management is necessary both to ensure the long-term sustainability of the port and local community support for future development of the port.
