We developed a novel coupler for azo pigments. The organic photoconductors (OPCs) using an azo pigment synthesized from this coupler show better characteristics than the OPCs using azo pigments derived from Naphthol AS. The solid state ~(13)C NMR spectra of these azo pigments indicated that the dominant tautomers of these azo pigments in the solid state are different, which reflects their characteristics. A high-sensitive unsymmetrical disazo pigment having large dipole moment in the excited state was designed and synthesized on the basis of the photo-carrier generation process model. The thermally stimulate current were measured to elucidate the factors for high sensitivity of OPCs using this unsymmetrical disazo pigment.
