Substation Automation Systems (SAS) are software-intensive, distributed command and control systems that operate equipment in electrical substations. While traditional automation systems were built as turnkey Systems based on proprietary technology, recent developments in automation, computing and networking have created a new generation of systems that have a main focus on interoperability. This paper introduces recent standardization activities in the field and, in particular, in relation with the incorporation of object technology in SAS. This paper describes the European R+D project DOTS, a real Implementation of the emerging standard IEC 61850 using CORBA networking.
