The safety and adequacy of blood and blood products still cannot be ensured in many WHO Member States. A priority strategic area is to adopt the principles of quality management in all areas of the blood transfusion services in order to ensure good organisation, management, donation from safe blood donors, testing of all donated blood for HIV and other transfusion transmissible infections and, on a consistent basis, provide for quality component production and appropriate clinical use of blood. WHO identified that urgent action needed to be devoted to developing a quality management project for blood transfusion services in all regions. This activity involves a strong training and information component covering the different aspects of quality assurance as well as the establishment of regional external quality assessment schemes for transfusion transmissible infections and for blood group serology.
