The influence of process parameters on the behavior of partially yttria stabilized zirconia EB-PVD thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) for aeroengines and land-based gas turbines was investigated. Overall density and microstructure of the columnar TBCs were studied in detail since they affect both thermal conductivity and lifetime. Chamber pressure and substrate temperature were found to influence these properties significantly. A large data base was generated through a statistical experimental approach to obtain a detailed understanding of the influence of EB-PVD process parameters on density, deposition rate, and deposition efficiency, and to formulate a mathematical description for TBC density.
