We have suggested an alternative solution to laser weld zinc coated steel sheets. We proposed a two-laser beams method, a high power Nd:YAG and CO2 laser or two beams split from the same source (Nd:YAG or CO2 laser), are used in tandem. The first beam cuts a slot, thus removing the zinc coating, while the second beam performs the weld. The paper discusses the method, its mathematical model, the proposed optical head and its economics showing also some experimental results.
