Recent Developments in the Resistance Welding of Zinc Coated Steels.

The problems associated with the resistance welding of coated steels, in particular zinc coated steels, are highlighted. Two factors limit the widespread application of such materials; (1) The limited life of welding electrodes (2) Difficulties in maintaining consistent weld quality. The various mechanisms operative in electrode wear are identified as surface alloying, electrode deformation, recrystallization, grain growth, cavitation and erosion. A number of developments that have markedly reduced the problems associated with the welding of steel coated with zinc, lead, tin or aluminium, are discussed.
