Dynamic behaviour of a pneumatic tyre under cornering conditions is predicted using an Explicit Finite Element code. A finite element model is developed in SDRC/I-DEAS modelling package for tyre cornering simulation. Geometry and material properties of various parts of the tyre are taken into account. Rubber is modelled using Yeoh material model. ABAQUS/Explicit, an explicit finite element code is used for these simulations. Simulations are performed at various slip angles ranging from 0°to 20°. Effect of ply steer is captured clearly in the simulation results. Cornering force and aligning torque characteristics at various slip angles and normal loads closely follow similar magic formula curves. Therefore, these results can be directly used for simulating complete multi body vehicle. Also, this approach can be extended to study the complete dynamic behaviour of tyres during actual tyre development phase, thus resulting in minimization of costly experiments.
