The ongoing upgrade program, designed to enhance the PSI 590 MeV proton beam facility from 1.8 mA beam intensity towards 3.5 mA, is reported. Preliminary experience with the first new accelerating cavity is referred to and extrapolated. Beam intensity limits for proton beam acceleration by a multistage cyclotron system are estimated.
