Sensing in 1/4 Century: From Senses To Sensibilities: Celebrating the 25th Sensor Symposium

A history and its background of the Sensor Symposium are described relating to the international conferences on solid state transducers. The symposium by IEEJ covers whole area of sensors and related technologies. It contributes much to our knowledge of sensor technology in a quarter century. Micro-machining technology is a major additional domain of the symposium. Micro-machining expand not only target area of the symposium but innovate in mass production process of sensor devices. From the end of last century, new sensing technique is evolving, in which sensor data are compared with knowledge based reference and identified. The identified results are described not by numerical value but words or image. The new knowledge based procedure; I would like to call sensing of recognition. Sensing intelligence plays important role in the sensing of recognition. Sensors and sensing intelligence appeal human sensibility through bilateral communication by user interface, and they create novel value in the electronic products, those are widely accepted in the market like video games or mobile phones. They will change the relationship between human and machines by innovative improvement of user interfaces.
