COST ― CAPACITY ― PROTOCOL TRADE-OFFS IN PON SYSTEMS

This paper discusses the trade-off between cost and capacity in passive optical networking (PON) systems. The history and status of the PON standardization efforts are presented. Next, the several choices for PON protocols are examined from a technical perspective, and the protocol choice is shown to have a ～15% influence on usable capacity, In contrast, the link speed is found to be far more influential. A simple model that allows the comparison of system costs as a function of subscriber demand is produced, and this shows that for demands below 6 Mb/s per subscriber, a 155 Mb/s PON is least cost, and above this demand rate, a 622 Mb/s PON is least cost.
